Rock Cycle Game

Today we played a game to learn all about the rock cycle.  The kids traveled between seven stations:   clouds, mountain, river, ocean, volcano  earth's interior, and soil.  At each station they would roll the dice and be told where to travel through the rock cycle and diagram their journey as a rock.  It included factors such as erosion, tectonic plate movement and subduction, pressure, magma, and more!  (I just like to say MAGMA like Dr. Evil!!).

See our rock cycle candy demonstration here.  MMMMMM!!

I got my idea here

Crazy hair day

I just had to share my hair today!  I'm a bit of a nature nut so having a bird's nest hairdo seemed appropriate!

Rock Cycle

We learnt about rocks and the rock cycle this week and even had a great demonstration using candy. Let's face it, candy always makes school better (as long as there is gym class after to help burn it off!)

See HERE to listen to the rock cycle song to "Life is a Highway".  The kids had fun singing along.

Check out our ROCK CYCLE GAME!

Teachers see here for more rock cycle activities, links, and printables

Minerals

We had a great time learning about mineral identification by testing various minerals hardness, steak, luster, and colour and comparing it to a chart to figure out each one.

Click here to learn about synthetic diamonds - something one of the kids asked about.

Click here to see a film about it

Bridge Building

We had a great time with the bridge building contest where the kids were given straws, tape, an paper clips and had to make a bridge that a gold ball could roll down.  Some ideas worked really well and we learnt a lot from those that didn't.

Proof Josh let Renee wear his hat during class!!  OH NO!!

Describe beauty

Dove has done it again!!  I love this video so much and hope it inspires you to all love yourself and stop being so critical of your own beauty.  I need to learn this lesson too!

Destroying Marshmallows

We did a lab this week where you draw a grid on a marshmallow and then apply the forces we learnt about in class:  compression, tension, shearing, flexion and torsion.  Then we record how the grid changes.  After we were done we all had a clean marshmallow to enjoy.  See more here http://www.technologystudent.com/forcmom/force1.htm
