Flower Power

We had a lot of fun last week building flowers!  The kids had to bring in supplies and in two periods build a flower and label all of the parts.  It is always a great way to learn and brightens up our classroom!

Flower power

This week we learnt about various plant structures from root to stem, leaves, and flowers!  We learnt about diffusion and osmosis and how water enters the roots of plants.  This demonstration shows how water (and food colouring) travels up the stem and out to the leaves and flowers.  Also the water leaves via transpiration but the colour stays in the pedals.  Beautiful.

 A great explanation here

Smart Plants

We learnt about how plants use their vascular system to absorb water.  See the dye that has gone up the celery stalk to the leaves?

We are also going to do a flower dissection where they will pick apart and discover all of the parts of a flower.

Winter flowers

It has certainly brightened up my day and my classroom having all of the beautiful flowers my students have made on display!   To learn the parts of a flower they had to build their own flowers, label the parts, name it, and even give a description of it's adaptations.  They had a great time and I am very proud of the results!
