Getting gory on Halloween!

As part of our Cells and Systems unit my students had the gruesome opportunity to dissect pig hearts and a tongue.  I seriously love their faces.  As much as they thought it was gross they were also fascinated.

Owl Pellets

Today the grade 7s are doing an owl pellet dissection.  An owl pellet is basically owl vomit full of the fur and bones of it's prey.  It sounds gross but the pellets are serialized and are like a combination of little archaeology digs and a treasure hunt all wrapped up in to one!  We are studying them to understand their role in the food chain, niche, ecology and more.

Owl Pellet

Today the grade 7s did an owl pellet dissection to teach them about the food chain and an early peek at some bone anatomy.  See this Youtube video for more information.  Keep posted for more pictures of the finished results.
THE OWL PELLETS ARE ALL STERILE SO PLEASE DON'T WORRY!!!  It isn't as gross as it sounds.  VERY COOL actually!!
